Step 1 of 3: Equipment

Sizing a furnace for this house is not a generic calculation. A contractor has to account for what the burner is actually asked to carry here. Homes in Warren County, MS run heat about five months a year, from November through March. A unit that is undersized for that load short-cycles more often, and the heat exchanger and ignition system pay for it across every November through March the equipment runs. A correctly sized install, with ductwork matched to the output, keeps each cycle within the range the equipment was built for.

The ductwork already in a Warren County house is the variable a contractor has to settle before anything else on a furnace installation. Half the homes in Warren County, Mississippi were built in 1978 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Duct runs laid out for an earlier generation of heating equipment were sized around different airflow volumes, and the electrical service in those houses was drawn up for a smaller load than a modern furnace and its controls require. A contractor quoting a new furnace here opens the existing system to find out whether it carries what is coming, or whether the installation scope grows from there.

What Gets Installed With a New Furnace

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house showing a furnace unit with ductwork and a flue pipe running through the interior rooms, which contain simple furniture.

The furnace itself sits in a utility space, basement, or closet at the center of the system. A burner assembly inside it ignites fuel, and a heat exchanger transfers the resulting warmth to air moving through the unit. The blower motor then pushes that heated air out into the home.

At the air intake end, a filter cabinet mounts directly to the furnace to catch dust before it reaches the heat exchanger. The flue pipe runs from the furnace to an exterior wall or roof, carrying combustion gases out of the house. A thermostat mounts on an interior wall and tells the furnace when to fire and when to stop.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines which components and configurations apply to your specific home.
